This is a photo of the Victory Arch in Baghdad’s Green Zone, officially known as the Swords of Qadisiyah. Saddam had it erected to celebrate his “victory” in the Iran-Iraq war, which he started, and which got over half a million people killed and wounded or displaced millions of others, only to result in status quo antebellum.
By the time I took this photo in April of 2025, the Iraqi people actually did have something to celebrate: after two decades of war, they had finally defeated ISIS, mostly on their own, and were finally enjoying a period of well-earned peace.
I took this photo in honour of the Iraqis, who are the warmest, most genuine and hospitable people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. And in particular, I wish to express my gratitude to our tour guides, who made that two weeks the most memorable trip of my life.
Speaking of which, if you ever need a tour guide, photographer, travel agent or small group tour in Iraq, contact me and I’ll be happy to introduce you to them.
